State/Lake L Station Closes Monday for Three-Year Rebuild Through 2029

The $444 million overhaul aims to create a fully accessible hub by 2029 with wider platforms, new elevators, a glass canopy and improved lighting.

Overview

  • Brown, Green, Orange, Pink and Purple line trains will continue to run in the Loop but will bypass State/Lake, with transfers directed to Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash.
  • The Lake Red Line subway station stays open, and new wayfinding signs now route riders seeking an elevated transfer to Washington/Wabash.
  • Lake Street is limited to local traffic between Dearborn and Wabash starting Monday, and southbound State Street is closed from Wacker to Washington, though sidewalks and bus stops remain open.
  • Demolition and decommissioning are scheduled overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with daytime construction planned from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The project is budgeted at $444 million with most funding from federal sources, and the redesign by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill includes wider platforms plus improved visibility.
