State Unveils $113.8 Million I-97 Widening to Ease Anne Arundel Bottleneck

Construction is slated to start in 2028 under a design-build contract following a planned 2027 procurement.

Overview

  • The seven-mile project will add one lane in each direction between Maryland Route 32 in Millersville and U.S. 50/301 in Annapolis.
  • Anne Arundel County will contribute $10.6 million, and the project appears in MDOT’s Draft Consolidated Transportation Program for FY2026–2031.
  • Work includes upgrades to the I-97 northbound bridge over Defense Highway, improvements to the bridges over Crownsville Road, and new stormwater management facilities.
  • SHA reports current daily traffic of roughly 94,000 to 113,000 vehicles and projects volumes topping 135,000 in future years.
  • Officials aim to limit construction impacts by using existing shoulders, though final traffic management and completion dates will be set after contract award.
