State Security Investigates Overnight Blast at Cottbus's Zelle 79

Investigators are examining a possible political motive following a string of attacks this year.

Overview

  • Police said unknown perpetrators ignited a larger amount of pyrotechnics around midnight on Parzellenstraße, damaging the entrance, mailbox, intercom and masonry.
  • Residents and a Sichere Orte spokesperson reported the door was partly torn from its hinges, the mailbox lid and concrete steps were damaged, smoke spread through the building and the fire alarm activated.
  • No injuries were reported in the latest incident, according to the housing project.
  • The state unit for politically motivated crimes has taken over the case, and investigators have not identified suspects or confirmed a motive.
  • The site was hit by a mailbox explosion in early December and by a May attack with firecrackers and torches that residents described as an attempted right‑wing arson, and police say they will keep closer watch on the property over New Year.
