Overview

• Troopers responded just before midnight on July 27 to a multi-vehicle collision in the southbound lanes of I-65 at mile marker 254 in Lake County.
• The pedestrian was identified by the Lake County coroner as 58-year-old Anthony Drake of Gary, who died at the scene after being struck.
• Authorities say a black 2005 Cadillac had pulled into the right lane due to the absence of an emergency shoulder when it was hit by a passing Ford Flex.
• The Ford Flex then collided with a concrete barrier and was involved in a secondary crash with a northbound vehicle, and other drivers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
• Officials are examining construction-related lane shifts and the lack of breakdown lanes as potential factors in this incident and a series of recent deadly crashes across the Chicago–Northwest Indiana corridor.
