State Police Investigate Danville Officer’s Fatal Shooting of 29-Year-Old

Overview

• Dispatch received a call around 9:37 p.m. reporting a suicidal man with a knife at Center Estates Apartments in Danville, according to police.
• Officers breached the apartment door to render aid and gave repeated commands for the man to drop the knife.
• Police say 29-year-old Cody Downey exited the residence, charged at officers while brandishing the knife, and knocked one officer to the ground.
• A Danville officer, a 10-year law enforcement veteran, fired and struck Downey in the chest; Boyle County EMS took him to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
• The officer has been placed on administrative leave as the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team conducts its investigation.
