Startup Launches India’s First Indigenous Super-Pressure Balloon

Mission SANA validated VISTA’s hydrogen-filled polymer design with company plans to extend endurance and scale commercial near-space flights.

Overview

  • Red Balloon Aerospace launched Mission SANA from Vijayawada on Wednesday, sending its VISTA super-pressure balloon to nearly 25 kilometres while carrying seven national and international payloads.
  • The flight tested a polymer‑nanocomposite envelope filled with hydrogen and a super‑pressure design that holds stable altitude through day‑night temperature cycles for longer dwell times.
  • Payloads included biological experiments, propulsion demos, earth‑observation sensors, onboard computing and navigation validation systems, and the company says all mission objectives were completed.
  • Union civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu officially flagged off the launch and the company has announced plans for 12–16 flights this financial year plus development of HELIX airships and ALTIS tethered systems.
  • The mission places India among a small group of countries with indigenous stratospheric hydrogen balloon capability and points to lower‑cost, fast‑deploy options for telecom, disaster response and high‑resolution monitoring that could reach underserved communities.
