Starmer Says He Raised Jagtar Singh Johal Case With Modi on India Trip

The British Sikh has been held in India for nearly eight years despite an acquittal in one case earlier this year.

Overview

  • Visiting India on a trade mission, the Prime Minister said the case is being pursued at every level and he will discuss it with Narendra Modi on Thursday.
  • Jagtar Singh Johal, 38, was arrested in November 2017 after his wedding and remains detained on federal terror charges despite a regional acquittal.
  • The Foreign Office says it continues to raise concerns with the Indian government and the Foreign Secretary will meet Johal’s brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal.
  • UK consular staff visited Johal this week, who sent a message asking whether there is a way to speed up progress on his case.
  • Campaign group Reprieve and Johal’s family urge decisive action, citing torture allegations and a 2022 UN finding that his detention is arbitrary.
