Overview

• Speaking in India, Keir Starmer said there would be "not in a Government role in terms of future appointments" for Peter Mandelson.
• Starmer dismissed Mandelson as UK ambassador to Washington last month after leaked emails were published, which No 10 and the Foreign Office said were "materially different" from information known at the time.
• The emails included Mandelson telling Jeffrey Epstein to "fight for early release" and saying "I think the world of you" as Epstein faced jail in 2008.
• Starmer noted Mandelson is on a leave of absence from the House of Lords so the Labour whip issue does not currently arise, and reports say he has not applied to return.
• Deputy head of mission James Roscoe is serving as acting ambassador in Washington while a permanent replacement is considered.
