Starmer Begins First India Visit to Drive Trade, Tech and Security Cooperation

The trip seeks to turn July’s IndiaUK CETA into concrete deals under the Vision 2035 roadmap.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host Keir Starmer in Mumbai on October 9 before a CEO Forum and joint keynote addresses at the Global Fintech Fest at the Jio World Centre.
  • Starmer is leading an over 100-strong delegation of UK CEOs, university vice-chancellors and cultural leaders to promote investment, education links and business partnerships.
  • Talks will centre on operationalising the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement signed in July 2025, which removes most tariffs once ratified and targets a major expansion of bilateral trade by 2030.
  • Both sides plan to advance the Technology Security Initiative and a Defence Industrial Roadmap, with collaboration spanning AI, fintech, telecoms, semiconductors, critical minerals and co-development of defence systems.
  • Discussions are expected to include extradition cases, concerns over pro‑Khalistan activities in the UK and mobility provisions, alongside a review of wider regional and global issues.
