Starlink Secures IN-SPACe Approval, Poised to Launch Satellite Internet in India

Overview

  • IN-SPACe has authorised Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd to operate its Gen1 LEO constellation over India for five years or until the satellites’ end of life.
  • Starlink becomes the third fully licensed satellite internet provider in India after Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio-SES, following its GMPCS licence from the DoT.
  • The Department of Telecommunications is expected to grant trial spectrum so Starlink can complete security compliance demonstrations before full allocation.
  • Starlink is preparing to build multiple ground gateway stations and has signed initial commercial agreements with VSAT providers and partners Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
  • A commercial rollout targeting rural and underserved regions is slated for late 2025 to early 2026 once infrastructure and regulatory requirements are met.
