Overview
- On July 9, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre granted Starlink a five-year licence to provision its Gen1 low Earth orbit satellite constellation, valid until July 7, 2030 or the end of its operational life.
- With this authorisation, Starlink becomes the third company authorized to offer satellite broadband services in India alongside Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio.
- IN-SPACe cleared specific Ka- and Ku-band uplink and downlink frequencies for both gateway and user beams under the licence conditions.
- Starlink must now obtain administratively assigned spectrum, build multiple ground gateway stations and complete mandated security and performance testing before launching services.
- The company is targeting a late-2025 or early-2026 commercial launch to extend high-speed connectivity to underserved and remote regions under India’s Digital India and BharatNet initiatives.
