Starknet Opens Seven-Day Poll to Explore Leaving Ethereum for Post-Quantum Layer 1

Developers argue detaching would let Starknet speed adoption of quantum-resistant cryptography through a funded research phase.

Overview

  • The community launched a seven-day, nonbinding poll on Thursday that asks STRK holders whether to fund research into making Starknet an independent, quantum-resistant Layer 1.
  • A yes vote would only start a research phase and lead to further, binding proposals; the poll cannot itself authorize any migration away from Ethereum.
  • The proposal says STRK would remain the native token and existing Ethereum–Starknet bridges would stay open, so users would not face an immediate token swap or bridge closure.
  • StarkWare notes Starknet’s STARK proofs and hash-based primitives are more resistant to quantum attacks than common signature methods, but key parts such as account authorization, bridges and data availability still rely on Ethereum and need further work.
  • Markets showed short-term volatility after the announcement and observers say any move would force Starknet to design consensus, recruit validators and replace data-availability and settlement roles now handled by Ethereum, which could affect liquidity and developer tooling.
