Overview
- The band released “Lay on Plastic Moment” as a personal song about singer Jo Roman’s 2023 move back to New York and the alienation she felt on return.
- Drummer Pat Drumm says the song began as an old demo that only came together through studio editing, and the group is currently working out how to play that finished arrangement live.
- The recording uses wobbly synths, heavy distortion and chopped, warped and reversed parts to create an atmospheric, recombinant pop sound.
- Starcleaner Reunion built much of Umbrella’s tone on tour, buying secondhand synths and amps on the road and making the Korg micro preset a signature element of the band’s palette.
- The single is part of the rollout for the band’s debut LP Umbrella, which is scheduled for release on September 25 via Take Care Records.
