Does Gen Z want the human touch?

Overview

  • Starbucks will convert or close roughly 80 to 90 Pick Up locations across North America by the end of fiscal 2026 under CEO Brian Niccol’s plan.
  • The chain is investing $500 million in its Green Apron Service initiative to upgrade about 1,000 cafés with new seating, lighting and community spaces.
  • Two new café prototypes will be piloted, including a 32-seat drive-thru design and a 10-seat compact urban store with lower construction costs.
  • Mobile orders, which account for 31 percent of transactions, will remain a priority through app and loyalty enhancements slated for rollout in 2026.
  • The shift responds to six consecutive quarters of same-store sales declines and a desire to reintroduce warmth and human connection to Starbucks locations.
