Starbreeze Cancels Dungeons & Dragons Project Baxter, Refocuses on Payday

The company is taking a SEK 255 million impairment to support a push toward cash-flow positivity in 2026.

Overview

  • Roughly 44 developers, including employees and contractors, are affected, with some redeployed internally and others supported to transition following union consultations.
  • Starbreeze says it will expand the Payday 3 team to about 50 developers by the end of 2025 and scale further in line with player engagement.
  • The updated strategy centers on Payday as a live-engagement platform and includes a selective work-for-hire services business to supplement revenue.
  • Project Baxter, announced in 2023 as a co-op Dungeons & Dragons title targeting 2026, is canceled with Starbreeze thanking Wizards of the Coast and planning to repurpose usable work into Payday.
  • During a Payday 3 anniversary stream, studio leaders said an offline mode is not feasible under the new priorities as the team focuses on faster backend-driven updates.
