Overview
- Officials announced on Tuesday that Lucasfilm and Disney have produced a Welsh-language dub of Star Wars: A New Hope, titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, which will air on S4C and its platforms from Christmas Day.
- The announcement at the National Eisteddfod named Matthew Rhys as the voice of Han Solo and Rhys Ifans as Obi-Wan Kenobi and confirmed the project as an official collaboration between Lucasfilm, S4C and Creative Wales.
- Lucasfilm credited Ellyn Stern as director and Michael Kohn as producer for the Welsh adaptation, and co-president Lynwen Brennan described it as the first-ever translation of Star Wars into Welsh.
- The cast also includes Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader and Osian Morgan as Luke Skywalker, alongside Llyr Ifans, Nia Roberts, Richard Harrington, Owain Arthur and Rhodri Meilir, giving prominent Welsh actors national exposure.
- The project is being framed as both a 50th-anniversary celebration of the film and a language-preservation effort that follows Lucasfilm’s past Indigenous dubs, with partners saying it should raise the profile of Welsh and support learning and local screen work.
