Stanford University will permanently lay off hundreds of employees this fall as part of sweeping budget reductions driven by shifting federal policies and financial pressures, according to state filings and statements from university officials.

Overview

  • A WARN notice filed with the California Employment Development Department indicates Stanford will cut 363 positions effective Sept. 30 under its 2025-26 budget reduction
  • In a July 31 letter, President Jonathan Levin and Provost Jenny Martinez described the move as necessary due to a “challenging fiscal environment” shaped by federal policy shifts
  • President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill raised Stanford’s endowment tax from 1.4% to 8%, significantly reducing funds for aid and research
  • Jobs slated for elimination span administration, research, alumni relations and campus operations across the university
  • Affected staff will receive severance based on years of service, three months of continued health insurance and outplacement assistance
