Stanford Taps John Donahoe as Athletic Director

University leaders expect his corporate expertise to rejuvenate underperforming programs as he builds a sustainable support model for Olympic sports.

Overview

  • John Donahoe will officially succeed Bernard Muir as Stanford’s eighth athletic director, with his tenure starting on Sept. 8.
  • Bernard Muir stepped down in February after a 13-year tenure marked by record NCAA success and growing challenges in revenue sports.
  • Donahoe brings leadership experience from Nike, Bain & Company, eBay and PayPal and holds a Stanford MBA from 1986.
  • Under the new structure, general manager Andrew Luck will report directly to Donahoe as he oversees the football program.
  • Donahoe is tasked with reversing slumps in football and men’s basketball and exploring innovative funding strategies for the university’s Olympic sports.
