Stalin Urges PM Modi to Fix Tamil Nadu Fertiliser Shortfall, Seeks Extra September Allotment

The plea follows months of deliveries covering only 57% of Tamil Nadu's fertiliser allocation.

Overview

  • Writing on September 16, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin asked the Centre to direct the Chemicals & Fertilizers Ministry to ensure immediate supply of the shortfall: 27,823 MT urea, 15,831 MT DAP, 12,422 MT MOP and 98,623 MT NPK.
  • He also requested additional September allotments of 40,000 MT urea, 20,000 MT DAP, 20,000 MT MOP and 40,000 MT NPK to meet Kharif needs and prepare for Rabi.
  • The state says manufacturers supplied only about 57% of centrally allocated urea, DAP, MOP and NPK to Tamil Nadu from April through August.
  • Paddy sowing has reached 5.661 lakh hectares, roughly 10% higher than last year, increasing fertiliser demand after an early monsoon.
  • A response from the Union government was not reported, and Stalin warned that delays could disrupt the current Kharif crop as well as the forthcoming Rabi season.
