Stalin Inaugurates CorningOptiemus Gorilla Glass Plant Near Chennai

The CorningOptiemus venture localizes Gorilla Glass production in India, supporting Tamil Nadu’s drive to scale high-value electronics exports.

Overview

  • Bigtech’s unit at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Pillaipakkam, Kancheepuram, was opened with a ₹1,003 crore investment to make Gorilla Glass covers for smartphones.
  • The project is expected to generate about 840 jobs initially, with roughly 500 additional roles projected by the end of next year.
  • At the launch, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin highlighted Tamil Nadu’s electronics exports of around $14.65 billion, which he said account for 41% of India’s total.
  • State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said the plant would target output of 30 million cover‑glass pieces in its first phase.
  • Corning and Optiemus signed an MoU with the state in January 2024 and laid the foundation in June 2024 before today’s inauguration.
