Stalin Inaugurates 729 New Homes for Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees

Launched in August 2021 under Rule 110, the programme aims to build more than 3,510 homes through phased construction across 67 refugee camps.

Overview

  • On July 7, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin virtually inaugurated 729 newly built units at a cost of Rs 38.76 crore from the State Secretariat.
  • The homes are spread across camps in Villupuram, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri and Virudhunagar districts to benefit displaced Sri Lankan Tamils.
  • The Assembly‐approved plan carries an estimated budget of Rs 180.34 crore to construct over 3,510 houses in 67 camps across 26 districts.
  • Supplementary civil works worth Rs 7.33 crore have upgraded internal roads, electricity lines and drinking water facilities in the camps.
  • Stalin also opened new Revenue and Disaster Management Department buildings at a total cost of Rs 54 crore to strengthen administrative support for the rehabilitation effort.
