Stalin Flags Off 20 Volvo Luxury Buses for Tamil Nadu’s Long-Distance Routes

The rollout is part of a 130-bus upgrade to bolster premium long-distance service.

Overview

  • Chief Minister M. K. Stalin inaugurated the fleet at Island Grounds in Chennai, marking their induction into service.
  • Procured under the 2025–26 modernisation programme, the purchase includes 110 non-AC long-distance and sleeper buses in addition to the 20 Volvo coaches.
  • The Volvo multi-axle coaches feature 51 2×2 semi-sleeper seats, panoramic windows, charging points, surveillance cameras, advanced sensors and internal fire-suppression sprinklers.
  • Each coach costs about Rs 1.75 crore and measures 15 metres, reflecting a premium specification for inter-city operations.
  • Services are slated to connect Chennai with major hubs including Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Nagercoil, Tiruchendur and Tiruppur.
