Stalin Expands DMK Organisational Districts to 110

The party says the redraw is meant to decentralise control and ready the DMK for its 16th organisational elections.

Overview

  • DMK president M K Stalin announced the change on Friday, August 28, increasing party districts from 77 to 110 and giving him authority to assign Assembly constituencies to the new units.
  • The party has divided constituencies so most new districts cover two or three Assembly seats while the densely populated Sholinganallur constituency has been made a single, standalone organisational district.
  • Stalin instructed existing district secretaries to hold executive meetings in the presence of headquarters observers and submit plans within 15 days to realign city, union, town, circle and branch units to the new map.
  • Party leaders reported additional reforms including fixed age caps, term limits for posts and a push to induct younger members, but they said precise rules and the timetable for the 16th organisational polls remain to be finalised.
  • The leadership says the overhaul aims to reduce the number of constituencies each district handles, strengthen local cadres after the April 2026 election setback and bring party work closer to voters at the branch level.
