Stalin Vows to Block CBSE Three-Language Plan in Tamil Nadu

The pledge spotlights a federal clash over an NEP rollout the Centre frames as mother-tongue multilingualism.

Overview

  • Following Saturday’s online crossfire, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday challenged national leaders at a rally and said the three-language policy will not be implemented in the state while the DMK is in power.
  • CBSE plans to start the policy in 2026–27 for Class 6, requiring three languages with at least two Indian languages, and some coverage notes English would be treated as a foreign language under the framework.
  • Stalin calls the plan a covert Hindi push that favors Hindi-speaking students, questions reciprocity from northern states, and warns of shortfalls in teachers, training, and funds for schools.
  • Stalin alleges the Centre withheld ₹2,200 crore under Samagra Shiksha, while Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan rejects the charge, defends the policy as flexible, and says Tamil Nadu is blocking PM-SHRI schools and Navodaya Vidyalayas.
  • The rollout remains scheduled nationally from 2026–27, but implementation in Tamil Nadu is contested and has become a major campaign issue ahead of the state’s April 23 election.
