Five people have been charged with felony insurance fraud in Ontario, California, after staging a car crash and filing a false insurance claim for up to $30,000.
The staged accident was caught on a home security camera, and witnesses reported that the alleged victim arrived at the scene after the crash.
The accused individuals are Priscilla Carmona Arajo, Juan Barajas, Gabriella Cervantes, Roberto Carlos Macias, and Humberto Ortiz.
Insurance fraud, including staged car crashes, cost the public more than $300 billion in 2021, according to the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud.
The proliferation of security cameras on buildings and vehicles is helping authorities crack down on such crimes.
