St. Paul Declares 96-Hour Snow Emergency With Two-Phase Plowing

An alternate-side parking pilot is planned to help plows reach residential streets sooner.

Overview

  • Night plow routes begin at 9 p.m. Wednesday and day plow routes start at 8 a.m. Thursday, with vehicles left in the way subject to ticketing and towing.
  • Public works officials say crews must keep downtown and major arterials clear first and give drivers rest before moving into neighborhoods, with roughly 30 plows on main streets and more added overnight.
  • St. Paul Public Works plans to test weekly alternate-side parking in more areas starting in about a month to allow faster access to residential streets after main routes are cleared.
  • City estimates put the cost of each snow emergency at $500,000 to $800,000, and planners budget for about four such operations each winter.
  • A 47-year-old man was reported killed after being struck by a snowplow at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport on Tuesday night.
