St AndrewsOld Course Set for Targeted Renovation Ahead of 2027 Open

A jointly approved, targeted plan adapts the Old Course to modern play without sacrificing its character.

Overview

  • The layout will grow by 132 yards to 7,445, with the 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 16th lengthened and the 12th slightly shortened.
  • New championship tees add 35 yards to No. 5 (to 605 yards), 17 to No. 6 (to 431), 18 to No. 7 and 29 to No. 10, with tee enlargements adding 21 to No. 11 and 10 to No. 16.
  • A restored left‑hand route on the 16th will be paired with two new bunkers; bunkers move on No. 2 and are added at elite drive length on Nos. 6 and 10, with tweaks to No. 9’s approaches and restoration work to the Road Hole bunker.
  • Irrigation upgrades began the week of Oct. 27, with on‑course works scheduled to start Nov. 3 under architects Mackenzie & Ebert.
  • The R&A and St Andrews Links Trust say the limited interventions will reintroduce strategic challenge for elite players and maintain everyday play as the Old Course prepares to host The Open on July 15–18, 2027.
