SSI Arrives Early on Aug. 29 as Third August Social Security Wave Pays Aug. 27

Some recipients face reduced payments due to the SSA's effort to recoup prior overpayments.

Overview

  • Beneficiaries born on the 21st–31st receive their August Social Security check on Wednesday, Aug. 27, per the SSA payment calendar.
  • September’s Supplemental Security Income will be paid Friday, Aug. 29, because Sept. 1 is Labor Day, moving the first-of-month payment to the prior business day.
  • A February report from the SSA inspector general found $13.6 billion in overpayments for fiscal years 2020–2023, and the agency is expected to withhold up to 50% from some checks to recover the money.
  • Standard schedules remain in effect: Social Security pays on Wednesdays based on birthdates, while SSI is issued on the first business day of the month.
  • Reference amounts cited for 2025 include a maximum SSI payment of $967 for individuals and a maximum monthly retirement benefit of $5,108 for those claiming at age 70.
