Overview
- SSGC has scheduled an overnight shutdown of the 24-inch Sher Shah mainline with work to take place between 10pm and 9am and warned that any extension could lower gas pressure in parts of Karachi.
- The company named neighbourhoods at risk of low pressure, including Baldia Town, Ittehad Town, Saeedabad, Naval Colony, multiple areas of Orangi Town, Altaf Nagar, Mehran City, Ramzan Goth, Musharraf Colony, Mawach Goth and the SITE Industrial Area.
- Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik told SSGC’s board to produce a comprehensive plan to tighten control of Unaccounted-for-Gas and create a sustainable business model for the utility.
- SSGC officials reported an approximately 57 percent volumetric reduction in Unaccounted-for-Gas, explained that UFG means gas lost or unbilled in the distribution network, and said K-Electric, industrial users and fertiliser plants were not load-shed while domestic customers receive gas three times daily.
- If repairs overrun, household cooks and small businesses could face low pressure or interruptions, and the government directive raises the chance of stricter operational and financial reforms at SSGC going forward.
