SSC Canine Unit Marks 28th Anniversary With New Detection Dogs

The unit has bolstered its detection capacity by inducting Zory, Balto and Kali following the retirement of two decorated dogs.

Overview

  • Zory specializes in locating people in collapsed structures; Balto is trained in narcotics detection; and Kali is skilled in explosives identification.
  • Molly and Héctor conclude their service after seven and eight years, respectively; they will remain under unit care in retirement.
  • The unit, founded on July 8, 1997 with three dogs and five handlers, now fields 12 canines and 16 handlers for security and rescue missions.
  • Canine teams have been deployed at high-traffic events in Mexico City and in emergency operations such as post-Hurricane Otis search efforts in Acapulco.
  • Director Oswaldo Cantellano Ledezma praised the dogs as loyal partners whose skills support handlers in daily duties and critical moments.
