Overview
- The Social Security Administration will issue August’s Supplemental Security Income payment early on Friday, July 31, so SSI recipients will receive a second payment in July and no SSI dated Aug. 1.
- The move follows the SSA rule that monthly SSI pays on the first business day of the month and is moved to the prior business day when the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
- Regular Social Security retirement benefits are unaffected by that rule and will be paid in August on Wednesdays by birth date: Aug. 12 for birthdays on or before the 10th, Aug. 19 for the 11th–20th, and Aug. 26 for the 21st and later.
- SSI maximums cited for 2026 include up to $994 for individuals and $1,491 for couples, and the SSA delivers benefits by direct deposit or the Direct Express debit card with routine paper checks largely phased out.
- The timing change does not alter longer-term program risks flagged by the Social Security trustees, who project the retirement trust shortfall around 2032, a factor that could influence future benefit policy and budgeting for beneficiaries.
