Srinagar Opens Waste‑to‑Wonder Garden Reusing Junk as Planters

A low-cost public garden turns discarded items into planting displays to demonstrate reuse as a practical response to growing solid-waste pressure.

Overview

  • The garden was opened to the public after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the site near Polo View on Friday, Aug 21.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir Floriculture Department built the site around Reduce, Reuse and Recycle principles and says about 90% of materials came from its own offices and gardens.
  • Discarded vehicles and equipment such as an Ambassador car, an old Jeep, tractors, scooters and a refrigerator have been repurposed as planters and landscape features.
  • Officials present the space as an educational spot for children and visitors to learn simple reuse techniques and as a low-cost addition to Srinagar’s tourist and recreational offerings.
  • Authorities suggested studying Chandigarh’s Rock Garden as a longer-term model and say the project could be copied to help manage urban waste and protect shrinking green space in the Valley.
