Overview
- Square announced Wednesday that a ChatGPT app and an Anthropic Claude plugin are live for eligible U.S. sellers, with Food & Beverage merchants using Square Online Ordering the first to participate.
- Eligible merchants are automatically opted in and manage visibility through the existing Square Dashboard so there is no new integration work or added Square marketplace commissions.
- Orders placed through these AI interfaces route into sellers’ current Square Online Ordering, point-of-sale systems, and kitchen display systems and appear in Square reporting with the order source identified.
- Square said it is developing further integrations, including work with Amazon on Alexa+ voice experiences, and is co-developing open agentic-commerce standards such as the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google and participating in AAIF and W3C groups.
- Industry research shows consumer use of AI is growing but uneven, with many users preferring AI for discovery and recommendations rather than fully handing over decisions, which will shape how quickly merchants see volume from these new channels.
