Square Enix to Limit Bahamut Access in Final Fantasy XI on Oct. 9

Square Enix says the restrictions are intended to preserve server responsiveness on an overburdened World.

Overview

  • Starting October 9, players will be unable to create new characters on Bahamut or transfer existing characters to that World.
  • Square Enix will also suspend the Vana'diel Adventurer Recruitment Program on Bahamut to steer newcomers toward other Worlds.
  • Producer and director Yoji Fujito cited Bahamut's consistently high concurrent users and the risk of overwhelming server processes.
  • Asura, which triggered similar measures in July, remains closed to new characters and transfers due to persistent load.
  • The company will continue monitoring populations across the game’s 23 Worlds, with reopening decisions based on server performance; reporting has linked the player surge to earlier discount campaigns and crossover interest from Final Fantasy XIV.
