Springs Fire 75% Contained After Catalytic Converter Ignited 50-Acre Blaze

  • Investigators on Friday found fragments of a catalytic converter, confirming that sparks from a passing vehicle ignited roadside vegetation Thursday evening.
  • Three brush fires reported around 6:20 p.m. near Lyons Valley Road and Honey Springs Road merged into the 50-acre Springs Fire after crews halted the smallest fire’s advance.
  • Cal Fire and San Diego County Sheriff’s Office deployed 147 firefighters along with 22 engines, six water tenders and air tankers to battle the blaze in steep, rocky chaparral terrain.
  • Mandatory evacuations sent residents north of Lyons Valley Road to a temporary shelter at Regal Edwards Cinemas in El Cajon before orders were downgraded and lifted by Friday afternoon.
  • Crews remain on scene to strengthen containment lines and patrol for remaining hot spots.
