- Jason Thomas Russell, 47, called 911 on Sept. 18 from the Boyce Street home in Spring Hill and refused to let paramedics enter to check his mother’s medications.
- The 79-year-old died Saturday after doctors reported malnourishment, sepsis, pneumonia, a urinary tract infection and maggot-infested, infected wounds.
- Deputies declared the residence a crime scene and documented heavily soiled furniture swarmed by flies and ants, a strong ammonia odor, soiled clothing and a bedside commode.
- Russell told investigators he bathed his mother by dipping her in the pool or wiping her with a cloth, according to the sheriff’s office.
- He is charged with neglect of an elderly person causing great bodily harm and resisting without violence, is being held without bond, and investigators are consulting with the medical examiner and state attorney on potential upgraded charges.
