Overview

  • Spotify has begun displaying Yoti-powered pop-ups in the UK, forcing users to verify their age via facial scans before accessing any music or videos labeled 18+.
  • Listeners judged underage by the biometric system will be prompted to upload government-issued ID and must complete verification within 90 days or risk losing their accounts.
  • Accounts that fail to pass age checks will first be deactivated and then permanently deleted if users do not satisfy requirements within the 90-day window.
  • The push comes after Ofcom began enforcing the Online Safety Act on July 25, giving regulators power to fine or block services for neglecting to restrict adult content.
  • Spotify and Yoti assure users that biometric data collected for verification is stored securely and purged immediately after confirming a user’s age.
