Spotify Starts Lossless Streaming for Premium Users at No Extra Cost

A staged launch delivers FLAC quality up to 24‑bit/44.1 kHz to early markets.

Overview

  • Rollout has begun in Germany with push notifications to Premium subscribers as access is enabled in waves.
  • Streams use FLAC up to 24‑bit/44.1 kHz across mobile, desktop and compatible Spotify Connect hardware.
  • Users must enable Lossless on each device in Settings under audio/media quality with separate options for Wi‑Fi, mobile data and downloads.
  • True lossless requires wired or Wi‑Fi connections because Bluetooth lacks bandwidth; Sony, Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser devices support it now, with Sonos and Amazon/Echo expected next month.
  • Spotify says nearly its entire catalog will be available in Lossless, data use can reach about 1 GB per hour, free‑tier accounts are excluded and availability is slated to reach 50+ regions by October.
