Spotify Launches Running Mode for iPhone

The iOS‑first feature uses AI to build tempo‑matched, coached workouts from playlists and signals Spotify's move deeper into fitness.

Overview

  • Spotify rolled out Running Mode to Premium iOS users in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden on July 30, and the feature appears in the app's Fitness Hub.
  • The tool offers 25 curated presets and lets users customize workout type, duration, target beats per minute and music genre so playlists match the selected tempo.
  • Running Mode adds optional English audio cues that give scripted coaching and timing prompts, but the voice guidance does not respond to runners in real time.
  • Unlike Spotify's 2015–2018 Spotify Running experiment, the new mode does not read phone sensors to detect pace automatically and instead requires users to set tempo and structure before starting.
  • The feature builds on Spotify's Prompted Playlists and its April Fitness Hub expansion with Peloton content, and Spotify has not announced Android, wider market or multi‑language plans yet.
