Spotify Launches Playlist Notes and Editor Profiles

Surfacing curator reasoning through editor profiles, Playlist Notes lets listeners add short contextual notes to songs, podcast episodes and audiobooks to make playlists more personal.

Overview

  • Spotify announced Playlist Notes on Monday, expanding its July User Notes test into a tool for both listeners and company editors to add short, 240-character annotations inside playlists.
  • The feature lets users attach context to individual songs, podcast episodes and audiobooks so they can share memories, recommendations or reasons for a pick.
  • User-created notes are rolling out on iOS and Android in more than 100 markets while editor notes and new Editor Profiles are available to Free and Premium users ages 16 and up in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
  • Anyone who can view a playlist can see its notes and tap an author’s name to open their profile, and all notes must follow Spotify’s Platform Rules and Terms of Use.
  • Spotify and industry observers say the change aims to make the app feel more social and transparent, help discovery by explaining curator choices on flagship playlists, and give Spotify another point of difference from rivals such as Apple Music and YouTube Music.
