Spotify Brings Real-Time Listening Activity and ‘Request to Jam’ to Mobile Messages

An opt-in rollout in Messages-supported markets is designed to keep sharing inside Spotify, with broad availability targeted by early February.

Overview

  • Listening Activity lets users share their current track or most recent song in real time inside Messages, visible only to contacts they’ve previously messaged.
  • Users can tap a friend’s activity to play or save the track, open the context menu, or react with emojis, and they can view others’ activity even if they don’t share their own.
  • Request to Jam allows Premium subscribers to send a Jam invite from a chat; the recipient becomes host on acceptance, and both can add songs to a shared queue, while Free users can join by invite.
  • The features are rolling out now on iOS and Android in markets where Messages is available, are limited to users 16 and older, and are expected to reach broad availability by early February.
  • Spotify says Jam daily activity has more than doubled year over year, Messages remain one-on-one with encryption at rest and in transit (not end-to-end), and group chats are planned for select markets.
