Sports Ministry Takes Charge of Sports Goods Manufacturing With Policy Due in September

A new task force will steer consultations toward a year-end support scheme to scale production and exports.

Overview

  • The government has formally added “Sports Goods Manufacturing” to the Sports Ministry’s remit through a Gazette Notification issued earlier this week.
  • At the inaugural Sports Goods Manufacturing Conclave, officials gathered NITI Aayog, Commerce, DPIIT, FICCI, CII, MSMEs and national sports federations to shape a roadmap.
  • Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said policy framing will be completed by September, with a dedicated scheme slated for launch in November–December.
  • The initiative aims to lift India’s global manufacturing share from roughly 1% to 25% by 2036 and to broaden the ecosystem to include sports medicines, infrastructure, literature and education design.
  • India’s sports goods industry is valued at about USD 4.88 billion, employs over 500,000 people across clusters such as Meerut, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Delhi-NCR, and exported roughly USD 523 million in 2023–24.
