Sports Illustrated, once a leading sports magazine, is facing a dire situation as its entire staff has been notified of job eliminations.
The Arena Group, which licenses the Sports Illustrated brand, reportedly missed a payment leading to the revoking of the licensing deal.
Sports Illustrated has been through several layoffs in recent years, including a slashing of one-third of its staff in 2019, and another significant cut a year later.
In December, it was discovered that Arena Group had been using artificial intelligence and fake writers to create articles on its website.
Despite the layoffs and financial struggles, Authentic Brands, the magazine's owner, insists that Sports Illustrated and its website will not go dark.
