Sports-Betting Abuse Falls 23% as Men’s March Madness Harassment Surges

After flagging more than 3,000 threats the NCAA urges faster content removal by social media platforms.

Overview

  • The NCAA hired Signify Group to monitor over one million social media comments and identified 3,161 abusive or threatening posts.
  • Sports betting–related abuse dropped 23% compared with last year, coinciding with the NCAA’s “Don’t be a loser” anti-harassment campaign.
  • Harassment in the women’s tournament fell 83% while the men’s side experienced a 140% increase, much of it aimed at selection committee members and coaches.
  • NCAA President Charlie Baker has made curbing online harassment a priority and is advocating for laws to ban prop bets on individual college players.
