Spirit to Furlough 1,800 Flight Attendants in Court-Supervised Overhaul

The carrier says the move aligns staffing with a sharply reduced schedule after refiling for Chapter 11.

Overview

  • Involuntary furloughs take effect Dec. 1, with voluntary six- or 12‑month leaves offered starting Nov. 1 and assignments made by inverse seniority under the union contract.
  • About one-third of Spirit’s roughly 5,200 flight attendants are affected, and their union says it is arranging preferential interviews at other airlines.
  • Spirit plans to cut November flying by about 25% year over year as it concentrates on stronger markets during its restructuring.
  • The airline is exiting service in roughly a dozen U.S. cities in October and is evaluating fleet size in talks with aircraft lessors, including AerCap.
  • Management has already reduced pilot staffing and told the pilots’ union it is targeting about $100 million in annual savings, while saying customer tickets and loyalty benefits will be honored during bankruptcy.
