Spirit to Furlough 1,800 Flight Attendants in Bankruptcy Restructuring

The move follows a 25% November schedule reduction during a court-supervised restructuring.

Overview

  • The furloughs affect roughly one-third of Spirit’s 5,200 flight attendants and take effect on Dec. 1, 2025.
  • Voluntary furloughs of six or twelve months open Nov. 1, with any remaining cuts implemented by inverse seniority, the AFA-CWA said.
  • Spirit is in its second Chapter 11 in less than a year and has recently delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Management has already furloughed hundreds of pilots and is seeking about $100 million in annual pilot cost concessions, according to the pilots’ union.
  • The carrier is shrinking its network by roughly 25% in November, exiting about a dozen U.S. cities, and is in talks with lessors as it evaluates fleet size.
