Spirit Airlines Cancels 100 Flights for Aircraft Inspections, Disruptions Expected to Last Several Days

Mandatory inspections to examine potential cracking around fasteners on 25 aircraft's airframes, disproportionately affecting Florida’s Orlando International Airport.

  • Spirit Airlines has cancelled 100 flights in order to inspect 25 aircraft for possible cracking around fasteners in the airframes, a federal requirement that if undetected could cause reduced structural integrity and potential rapid decompression of the plane.
  • The cancellations represent 11% of Spirit's schedule, the highest among major US carriers according to FlightAware tracking.
  • While Spirit has not provided details about the nature of the inspections, it has said they are necessary and are expected to disrupt services for several days. Spirit's fleet comprised 198 aircraft as of June 2023.
  • Florida's Orlando International Airport had the most flight cancellations, as Spirit Airlines is the second-largest carrier there.
  • Despite this number of cancellations, Spirit Airlines has cancelled more than 3,600 of its flights this year, which is lower than the cancellation rate of Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines.
