Spiel Essen Plans Mass Catan Game to Break 1,100-Player Record on Oct. 24

Kosmos stages the attempt in Essen’s Grugahalle with Smudo as on-stage commentator.

Overview

  • Participants must buy a Messe day ticket and add a €15 Catan participation ticket online, while a spectator add-on costs €3 and on-site box offices and multi-day passes are not offered this year.
  • The Grugahalle capacity is just under 1,200, and as of Oct. 10 tickets were still available, according to a Messe spokesperson.
  • Coverage conflicts on which version will be used—one report cites “Catan Collect,” another “Catan – Connect”—so the exact edition remains unclear.
  • Spiel Essen runs Oct. 23–26 with a record 77,500 m² footprint including newly added Hall 7, hosting over 900 exhibitors from 51 countries and expecting well over 200,000 visitors.
  • For the Oct. 24 event, doors open at 17:00 with a stage program at 18:00 and synchronized play starting at 19:00 using shared dice results and timed rounds, with guidance materials already published.
