SPHL Approves Mobile Expansion Team for 2027 Debut

Zawyer Sports & Entertainment will run the franchise at the OVG-managed Mobile Arena.

Overview

  • The SPHL Board of Governors unanimously approved Mobile’s admission on Sept. 17, confirming the league’s expansion to the Port City.
  • The team will begin play in the 2027–28 season with home games at the new 10,000-seat Mobile Arena, which is slated to open by January 2027 under Oak View Group management.
  • Jacksonville-based Zawyer Sports & Entertainment will own and operate the franchise, led by CEO Andy Kaufmann.
  • The club is currently unnamed, with a public “Name the Team” contest underway and season-ticket deposits now being accepted.
  • Professional hockey returns to Mobile for the first time since the ECHL’s Mobile Mysticks ceased operations in 2002, placing the city alongside SPHL neighbors in Birmingham, Huntsville and Pensacola.
