Speeding Truck Kills Four on Varanasi Overbridge

An official probe will examine speed and roadside behaviour to determine culpability.

Overview

  • A truck struck a stationary SUV on the Rupapur overbridge on Monday morning after the vehicle stopped and some occupants stepped out to take selfies.
  • Police said the truck came from the Prayagraj side, rammed the Scorpio from behind and ran over youths standing near the vehicle.
  • Four people were killed and multiple others were injured; police have identified three of the dead as Aman Yadav, Golu Yadav and Alok Mishra and say two of the injured, Kanhaiya Yadav and Nikhil Kumar, are in critical condition.
  • Rescuers and passersby used a gas cutter to free people trapped in the SUV and took the injured to a trauma centre, and police have seized the truck and opened an investigation.
  • The group were friends from Shivpuri returning from the Vindhyachal temple in Mirzapur and authorities say the probe will focus on the truck's speed and the danger of stopping on an overbridge, which could lead to criminal charges or tighter local enforcement.
